Dauzats viaggiò in Egitto con una missione diplomatica francese nel 1830 e dipinse questa vista impressionante della Grande Piramide subito dopo il suo ritorno a Parigi. Nel suo racconto scritto del viaggio (Quinze jours au Sinaï, 1839, coautore di Alexandre Dumas), l'artista si meravigliava della destrezza fisica "lizzante" necessaria per scavare sopra l'antico monumento" massicci blocchi di pietra per raggiungere la vetta.
