Dos vaqueros y sus ganados están en la baja luz del sol junto al río Merwede. Un jinete acaba de pasar. En la distancia, podemos ver las ruinas de Huis te Merwede, un poco fuera de la ciudad de Dordrecht. Cuyp especializado en este tipo de paisaje con animales bañados en un resplandor cálido. Este efecto de iluminación fue la marca de artistas que pintaron paisajes italianos. Cuyp adoptó su técnica en sus paisajes, que de otro modo son intransigentemente holandeses.
