Questa figura lithe ma robusta è considerata la più bella variante di un modello popolare pensato per essere basato su un prototipo antico e per rappresentare Marsyas. Secondo la mitologia, Marsyas era un satiro che ha preso un flauto scartato da Athena (perché sentiva che ha distorto il suo volto quando l'ha fatto esplodere) e divenne un musicista esperto sullo strumento. In alcune versioni del bronzo, il soggetto indossa il bendaggio facciale utilizzato dai giocatori di flauto greci e romani. Le mani avrebbero originariamente tenuto un doppio flauto. Immagini e derivazioni del tipo si trovano anche in affreschi e disegni quattrocento, da Firenze a Padova, da Pisa a Loreto. Gli attribuzione ad artisti concepibilmente responsabili dell'attuale bronzo hanno variato con larghezza simile, da Firenze a Nord Italia, ma qualunque sia la sua autorevolezza sembra probabile che Pollaiuolo
