Jean Cox-Rearick ha legato l'attuale San Sebastiano ad un disegno negli Uffizi, Firenze, che è anche strettamente legato ai Quattro Evangelisti nella cappella Capponi. Il disegno è uno studio per la figura di San Matteo in cui l'Evangelista ha una posa simile a quella del santo presente: organizzato frontalmente con il corpo girato a destra, guardando a sinistra e sostenendo il peso del corpo sul gomito sinistro, il torso parzialmente coperto da un mantello che gli permette di essere visto. Il dipinto attuale è stato datato 1533, in un momento in cui Bronzino stava definendo la sua personalità artistica seguendo la sua assimilazione di Pontormo
