Alla fine del 1894, Akseli Gallen-Kallela andò a Berlino per imparare le basi della stampa, che stava godendo una nuova voga a causa della popolarità dei tagli di legno giapponesi e dello stile Art Nouveau decorativo. Il suo viaggio fu interrotto quando sua figlia Marjatta morì di difteria nel marzo 1895. Il Fiore della Morte è un memoriale per lei. È stato scolpito su un disco di legno di pino, morbido e grossolanciato, ma la stampa è sottile e delicata. Il poema allegato è dell'artista stesso:
