Il luogo in cui Albert Edelfelt ha creato la maggior parte dei suoi dipinti del popolo finlandese ordinario era il suo studio estivo ad Haikko. Per lui, il popolo locale di Uusimaa era abbastanza sufficiente a rappresentare tutta la nazione. Visitò la Finlandia orientale una o due volte, ma solo come osservatore che mantenne la sua distanza.
