Albert Sands Southworth (1811-1894) e Josiah Johnson Hawes (1808-1901) operarono insieme uno studio di daguerreotype a Boston, MA. Sono considerati i migliori fotografi di ritratto americani del XIX secolo. Erano in partnership per circa vent'anni a partire dal 1843 con ritratti commerciali come il loro obiettivo primario. Una caratteristica unica del partenariato è che il lavoro dello studio non è stato completato da diversi fotografi. Invece, tutto il lavoro prodotto dallo studio era per mano di Southworth, Hawes, o i due uomini insieme. La collezione George Eastman House contiene circa 1200 daguerreotipi di Southworth & Hawes. Il Museo ha allestito una grande mostra in collaborazione con il Centro Internazionale di Fotografia nel 2005 chiamato Young America: I Daguerreotipi di Southworth & Hawes.
