La storia popolare di Washington Irving “Rip Van Winkle” (1819–20) ha ispirato diversi artisti a selezionare momenti drammatici da esso per i soggetti di dipinti. Browere ha scelto il conflitto tra il dazed e unkempt Van Winkle, che si è appena risvegliato da un sonno lungo e profondo, e un grande gruppo di curiosi. Un funzionario della città affronta Van Winkle con domande circa la sua apparizione e la sua politica, ed è alla fine scoperto che il vecchio ha sgozzato attraverso l'intero periodo della rivoluzione americana e il cambiamento nel governo del paese.
