Dürer è stato il principale rappresentante dell'arte rinascimentale tedesca, e un sostenitore chiave di nuove idee in Europa del Nord. Questo pannello è stato eseguito a Venezia, durante la sua seconda visita in Italia, dove è stato salutato come artista presunto, ed è stato identificato come il dipinto indicato in una lettera da Dürer al suo amico Willibald Pirckheimer, l'umanista di Norimberga.
