Questo è il più grande di Dürer e, nella sua ricchezza di dettagli pittorici, incisione più ambiziosa. Essa dimostra l’intenso interesse scientifico dell’artista nella natura. Il soggetto dell’improvvisa conversione di san Eustace al Cristianesimo di fronte a un cervo con un crocifisso tra i suoi forbici ha fornito a Dürer l’opportunità di raffigurare una varietà di animali in pose diverse, insieme ad un magnifico paesaggio.
