Este dibujo fue producido en preparación para una prestigiosa comisión de la ciudad de Nuremberg. Organizado a través de dos paneles, empareja al fundador del Santo Imperio Romano, Carlomagno (alrededor de 742–814) a la izquierda, con Sigismund de Luxemburgo (1368–1437), quien depositó la venganza imperial en Nuremberg en 1424. A pesar de sus muchos detalles, incluyendo los bisagras en el marco central, este boceto captura una idea temprana para el proyecto. Las pinturas finales muestran cambios significativos. Estos fueron destinados a la cámara donde se guardaba la noche antes de su exhibición ceremonial anual al pueblo.
