In questa scena evocativa del Medioevo, i monaci si trasformano in una cripta gotica che porta un cadavere in una bara aperta. Nel momento in cui entrano nello spazio scenico, i loro fratelli, avendo aperto una tomba per ricevere il corpo, scoprono che è già occupato, scatenando un movimento drammatico. La precisa fonte letteraria di questa composizione, ritenuta fino agli anni 1820, continua ad eludere gli studiosi, ma lo scenario ghoulish era un punto di forza per Fragonard e i suoi contemporanei. Il pittore è oggi oscurato dal padre Jean Honoré Fragonard, ma è stato uno degli artisti più versatili e ricercati della sua generazione.
