Questa immagine illustra la parabola biblica del buon samaritano, che viene in aiuto di un uomo ferito. Avendo vestito le ferite dell'uomo, il Samaritano è mostrato portandolo in una locanda, dove avrebbe pagato per la cura dell'uomo. La versione attuale fu ammirata da Delacroix nel 1853, mentre Decamps si preparava a chiudere lo studio di Parigi e si ritirava a Fontainebleau. La sua superficie densamente impastata è caratteristica del modo tardivo di Decamps, in cui i soggetti di profonda importazione morale sono trattati con austerità formale.
