Esta imagen ilustra la parábola bíblica del Buen Samaritano, que viene a la ayuda de un hombre herido. Después de haber vestido las heridas del hombre, el samaritano se muestra llevándolo a una posada, donde pagaría el cuidado del hombre. La versión actual fue admirada por Delacroix en 1853, ya que Decamps se estaba preparando para cerrar su estudio de París y retirarse a Fontainebleau. Su superficie gruesamente empasada es característica de la manera tardía de Decamps, en la que los sujetos de profunda importación moral se tratan con austeridad formal.
