Console come questo sono stati spesso utilizzati dall'élite puramente per la decorazione. Le Étagères erano particolarmente popolari nelle opulenti salotti di metà del XIX secolo, dove gli specchi riflettevano la luce e gli scaffali mostravano ogni sorta di ornamenti, argento, porcellana, dispari e oggetti d’arte—simboli di affluenza e gusto. I supporti curvi, elaborati display floreali e figure cherubiche che decoravano i mobili 100 anni prima erano di moda ancora una volta nello stile Rococo Revival, questa volta più audace e lussureggiante, richiamando i modelli francesi di Régence del XVIII secolo. Questo superbo esempio è identico al Alexander Roux étagère al Metropolitan Museum of Art.
