Como especialista en la técnica de la pintura del retrato, Dubois-Drahonet fue encargado por la familia Bourbon de Orleans para crear nueve retratos completos de sus hijos. Los hijos nacieron del matrimonio de Luis Felipe, futuro rey de Francia, y María Amalia de Borbón, princesa de las Dos Sicilias e hija de Ferdinando I Bourbon. Los retratos fueron ejecutados entre 1826 y 1828.
