Mientras su caballo descansa cerca, un árabe se sienta ante las paredes de una ciudad, relajado pero alerta. Aunque no tiene nombre, su dignidad pronunciada puede ser una alusión al líder militar y religioso argelino ‘Abd al-Qadir (1808-1883). Un enemigo de los franceses tras su invasión de su país en 1830, el estadista finalmente ganó el respeto de sus adversarios por su valentía, sabiduría y juicio. Este hombre tiene un parecido físico general a ‘Abd al-Qadir, cuya semejanza fue difundida ampliamente a través de pinturas, impresiones y fotografías. Dedreux, pintor popular de sujetos ecuestres, hizo al menos dos retratos de caballos que le pertenecían en los años 1850.
