Mary Degg war die Tochter von Captain William Degg, einem britischen Armeeoffizier und Catherine Meighen. Marys Mutter starb innerhalb von Monaten nach der Geburt, und ihr Vater wieder geheiratet, während sie in Irland diente. Am 1. Januar 1756 heiratete Maria Herrn Robert Manners, und innerhalb von Tagen ihrer Hochzeit wurden sie und ihr neuer Mann dem König vorgelegt. Maria wurde als eine große Schönheit bezeichnet. Ein imposantes Porträt von ihr im späteren Leben wurde 1826 von Sir Thomas Lawrence gemalt und ist auch in der Sammlung der Nationalgalerien von Schottland.
