Mary Degg era la hija del capitán William Degg, oficial del ejército británico, y Catherine Meighen. La madre de María murió dentro de los meses del nacimiento, y su padre se volvió a casar mientras servía en Irlanda. El 1 de enero de 1756, María se casó con Lord Robert Manners, y dentro de los días de su boda ella y su nuevo esposo fueron presentados al Rey. María fue descrita como una gran belleza. Un imponente retrato de ella en la vida posterior fue pintado por Sir Thomas Lawrence en 1826 y también está en la colección de las Galerías Nacionales de Escocia.
