Mary Degg era la figlia del capitano William Degg, un ufficiale dell'esercito britannico e Catherine Meighen. La madre di Maria morì entro mesi dalla nascita, e suo padre si risposò mentre serviva in Irlanda. Il 1o gennaio 1756, Maria sposò Lord Robert Manners, e entro giorni dal loro matrimonio lei e il suo nuovo marito furono presentati al re. Maria è stata descritta come una grande bellezza. Un imponente ritratto di lei nella vita successiva è stato dipinto da Sir Thomas Lawrence nel 1826 ed è anche nella raccolta delle Gallerie Nazionali di Scozia.
