Una varietà di aziende tedesche produssero teste di bambole in vendita negli Stati Uniti. La maggior parte di queste aziende si trova nella provincia di Turingia, una regione ricca di kaolin necessaria per l'argilla di porcellana e ricca di legno usato per incendiare le fornaci. I produttori di bambole hanno trovato porcellana un materiale adatto per le teste perché potrebbe essere facilmente costretto a stampi con dettagli intricati. Le prime teste di bambola sono state fatte con un metodo press-mold in cui fogli di argilla malleabile sono stati costretti in uno stampo di due parti. Quando il corpo di argilla indurito, le due parti della testa sono state unite insieme. Nel metodo di slittamento, iniziato intorno al 1860 e ampiamente usato dal 1890, una miscela di argilla liquida è stata versata in uno stampo e lasciata indurire. Americani importato bambole testa bambole da circa 1840 fino agli anni '30.
