Au cours d'une période de taux élevés de mortalité infantile, le portrait posthume a joué un rôle central dans la capture des ressemblances des êtres chers perdus. Andrews a peint ce portrait commémoratif des enfants de Nathan Starr peu après la mort du plus jeune fils, Edward, qui apparaît au centre tenant un bâton de jeu destiné à un vol d'oiseaux blancs au loin. Dépisté dans la maison familiale de Middletown, Connecticut, les enfants sont baignés d'une lumière douce et céleste tandis qu'ils jouent un jeu de navette, un précurseur de badminton.
