La fine del XVII secolo vide l'emergere di nuovi tipi di mobili, molti creati da André-Charles Boulle. Boulle probabilmente ha inventato il piatto di ufficio (tavola di scrittura piatto), come è conosciuto oggi. In precedenza, i tavoli da scrittura erano stati supportati da otto gambe e avevano diversi cassetti su ogni lato (vedi, per esempio, 1918.5.101). Ma intorno al 1710, Boulle semplificato il disegno eliminando i cassetti e riducendo il numero di gambe a quattro. Ha anche dato una curva elegante alle gambe una volta-straight.
