Das späte siebzehnte Jahrhundert sah die Entstehung neuer Möbel, viele von André-Charles Boulle geschaffen. Boulle erfand wahrscheinlich die Büroplatte (Flachtisch), wie es heute bekannt ist. Bisher waren Schreibtische von acht Beinen unterstützt worden und hatten auf jeder Seite mehrere Schubladen (siehe z.B. 1918.5.101). Aber um 1710, Boulle vereinfachte das Design, indem die Schubladen beseitigen und die Anzahl der Beine auf vier reduzieren. Er gab auch eine elegante Kurve zu den einstigen Beinen.
