Paolo Landriani (1757-1839) qui rappresentato da Andrea Appiani, è stato un importante scenografo che si è formato all'Accademia di Brera di Milano. Inizia alla Scala nel 1792 con Il mercato di Monfregoso di Zingarelli, Il fanatico di Paisiello in berlina e Adonis e Venere di Pitrot. Dal 1796 al 1801 vestiva da sei a otto produzioni per stagione. La sua stella cominciò a svanire con l'arrivo del grande scenografo della prossima ondata: Alessandro Sanquirico. Landriani, scenografo e teorico del design, è l'artista che racchiude i gusti e l'estetica del primo neoclassicismo. Era amico del pittore Appiani, quindi motivo di questo ritratto notevole.
