Paolo Landriani (1757-1839) von Andrea Appiani dargestellt, war ein wichtiger Set-Designer, der an der Brera Academy in Mailand ausgebildet wurde. Er begann 1792 in La Scala mit Zingarellis Il mercato di Monfregoso, Paisiellos Il fanatico in berlina und Pitrots Adonis und Venus. Von 1796 bis 1801 kleidete er sechs bis acht Produktionen pro Saison. Sein Stern begann mit der Ankunft des großen Set-Designers der nächsten Welle zu verblassen: Alessandro Sanquirico. Landriani, der Set-Designer und Designtheoretiker, ist der Künstler, der den Geschmack und die Ästhetik des frühen Neoklassizismus verkapselt. Er war der Freund des Malers Appiani, daher der Grund für dieses bemerkenswerte Porträt.
