Paolo Landriani (1757-1839) representado aquí por Andrea Appiani, fue un importante diseñador de conjuntos que se entrenó en la Academia Brera de Milán. Comenzó en La Scala en 1792 con Il mercato di Monfregoso de Zingarelli, Il fanatico de Paisiello en berlina y Adonis y Venus de Pitrot. De 1796 a 1801 vistió seis a ocho producciones por temporada. Su estrella comenzó a desvanecerse con la llegada del gran diseñador de la próxima ola: Alessandro Sanquirico. Landriani, el diseñador y teórico del diseño, es el artista que encapsula los gustos y la estética del neoclásico primitivo. Era amigo del pintor Appiani, por lo tanto la razón de este retrato notable.
