Non è noto per quale chiesa è stata fatta questa pala d'altare. Dal momento che è su tela potrebbe essere stato facilmente inviato da Mantova, dove Mantegna era artista di corte, in una chiesa altrove, ed è infatti prima registrato a Milano. La pergamena del Battista, intorno alla sua croce, è inscritta con il testo latino familiare, parzialmente visibile,
