Ya que se trata de lienzos podría haber sido enviado fácilmente desde Mantua, donde Mantegna era artista de la corte, a una iglesia en otro lugar, y es de hecho primero grabado en Milán. El pergamino del Bautista, alrededor de su cruz, está inscrito con el texto latino familiar, parcialmente visible,
