Die letzte große Schlacht, die von oared galleys kämpfte, sah die Schiffe der christlichen Heiligen Liga der Flotte des muslimischen Osmanischen Reiches in Lepanto gegenüber.Die frenetische Melodie in Lepanto wurde von Andrea Vicentino in seinem epischen Gemälde, nun im Dogenpalast in Venedig, prächtig gefangen genommen.
