Godendo del successo internazionale come pittore di ritratti e soggetti mitologici, storici e letterari, Kauffman è stata particolarmente ammirata in Inghilterra, dove è stata uno dei membri fondatori della Royal Academy of Arts. Dopo il 1781 Kauffman si stabilì a Roma e sviluppò una clientela alla moda che comprendeva molti visitatori del Grand Tour e aristocratici europei. I Charlestoniani del XVIII e XIX secolo parteciparono alla tradizione del Grand Tour. Il dipinto di Cymon e Iphigenia fu probabilmente acquistato da un membro della famiglia Middleton nel 1780. Nathaniel Russell Middleton lo espose alla Carolina Art Association nel 1858.
