Anna Atkins wurde als Botaniker ausgebildet und verwendete fotografische Techniken, um visuelle Aufzeichnungen von botanischen Exemplaren zu machen. Sie erfuhr von der Entwicklung der Fotografie von Willam Henry Fox Talbot und lernte, den Cyanotyp-Prozess direkt von seinem Erfinder Sir John Herschel zu verwenden.
