Questa opera, una delle ultime di Girodet, tradisce la meticolosa tecnica caratteristica del neoclassicismo del suo maestro, Jacques-Louis David, così come le forme perfezionate del Rinascimento fiorentino. Le lettere scambiate tra Girodet e la babysitter indicano che si conoscevano bene, e che ogni dettaglio del ritratto è stato elaborato in anticipo. Il marito di Madame Reizet era un importante funzionario governativo; suo figlio, Marie-Frédéric de Reiset, fu curatore al Louvre che in seguito divenne direttore dei Musei Nazionali francesi.
