Questo bozzetto di olio è stato il modello per un ritratto ora nel Musée Girodet a Montargis. Quando quella tela a grandezza naturale fu venduta all'asta postuma dello studio di Girodet, fu catalogata come Ritratto di un indiano e datata 1807. Il costume, tuttavia, è ottomano, non indiano. Girodet fu uno dei pittori più dotati ad emergere dallo studio di Jacques-Louis David. Tornato a Parigi nel 1795 dopo il suo soggiorno all'Accademia Francese di Roma, Girodet sviluppò uno stile caratterizzato da preciosità letteraria, effetti pittorici immaginari, soggetti e ambientazioni esotiche.
