Vallayer-Coster si unì alla Royal Academy francese nel 1770 come pittore di vita morta, il genere convenzionalmente considerato adatto a artisti di sesso femminile nell'Europa settecentesca e il più basso della gerarchia dell'Accademia di generi. Ha apprezzato l'opinione critica favorevole durante la sua carriera, così come il patrocinio della regina Maria Antonietta prima della rivoluzione e dell'imperatrice Josephine dopo. Questo dipinto era probabilmente tra le quattro nature morte e due ritratti che Vallayer-Coster esponeva al Salone del 1781.
