Quando il pittore francese Jacques-Louis David si avvicinò a lavorare su una nuova edizione delle opere di Jean Racine, passò il compito al suo allievo Girodet, che eccelleva nell'illustrazione della letteratura. Questo disegno altamente raffinato raffigura una scena di RacineAndromaque,una storia complicata di amore incontaminato e di tradimento politico. Cléone introduce l'amore-cieco Oreste a Hermione, che sfrutta il suo affetto per fargli fare le sue offerte. Girodet contrasta abilmente l’ansia di Oreste e il carattere calcolante di Hermione. Con le braccia piegate, si allontana, come se una statua tra le colonne di un interno in marmo fresco. Eppure, l’occhio arretrato di Hermione avverte lo spettatore della sua astuzia manipolazione, che alla fine fa impazzire Oreste.
