Dentro de una caverna oscura, dramáticamente iluminada por una antorcha, el cuerpo cojo pero poderoso de Cristo está a punto de ser bajado en su tumba. La luz en el horizonte indica el atardecer sobre su vida terrenal o el amanecer en previsión de un nuevo comienzo con su resurrección. Este rico aceite pintado sobre cobre fue encargado por un canon de la catedral de San Pietro en Bolonia como un regalo a una figura importante en Roma, pero al final el canon lo mantuvo y envió una copia de Guido Reni.
