In einer dunklen Kaverne, dramatisch von einer Fackel beleuchtet, wird der limp Christi, aber mächtiger Körper in sein Grab abgesenkt. Licht am Horizont signalisiert entweder Sonnenuntergang auf seinem irdischen Leben oder Sonnenaufgang in Erwartung eines neuen Anfangs mit seiner Auferstehung. Dieses reich bemalte Öl auf Kupfer wurde von einem Kanon der Kathedrale von San Pietro in Bologna als Geschenk an eine wichtige Figur in Rom in Auftrag gegeben, aber am Ende der Kanon hielt es und schickte eine Kopie von Guido Reni.
