Ce chef-d'œuvre d'Annibale représente l'une des saintes les plus populaires, Catherine d'Alexandrie. La Vierge et l'Enfant apparaissent miraculeusement devant Catherine, qui s'incline la tête comme l'enfant Christ pose un anneau sur son doigt. Ce mariage mystique est une métaphore de son engagement pour une vie chrétienne chaste. La roue piquée dans le coin inférieur gauche et l'ange tenant une paume derrière Catherine annoncent son martyre. Annibale peint ce retable sous le patronage de l'adolescent duc Ranuccio I Farnese pour l'église Capucin de Parme, en 1585. Dix ans plus tard, le frère de Ranuccio, le cardinal Odoardo Farnese, engage Annibale pour exécuter la magnifique décoration de son palais romain. Ranuccio permit à Annibale d'emmener ce tableau à Rome comme cadeau d'introduction pour son frère et comme pièce maîtresse de son énorme talent.
