Dieses Porträt zeigt einen Komponisten in seiner Arbeit. Wie Agostinos kontemporanes Porträt eines Lutenspielers in Capodimonte, eroberte Annibale sein Thema in einem Moment des Handelns. Der Musiker dreht die Seiten seiner Partitur und hebt seinen Stift von seinem Tinwell, um eine frische Notation zu beginnen. Sein Kopf dreht sich und seine Augen sehen uns zu, als hätten wir gerade seine Arbeit unterbrochen. Dieses Porträt wird von dem Musiker Claudio Merulo gedacht, der eine erfolgreiche Karriere in ganz Italien genossen hat. Er war der Organist von San Marco in Venedig, komponierte Musik für die Hochzeit des toskanischen Großherzogs Francesco de’ Medici und trat 1584 in das Farnese Gericht in Parma. Nach seinem Tod 1604 errichtete Ranuccio I Farnese sein Beerdigungsdenkmal in der Kathedrale der Stadt.
