Lang era tra i numerosi allievi di talento di Chase all'Accademia della Pennsylvania delle Belle Arti, dove ha anche preso lezioni con Cecilia Beaux. Abbracciando un approccio impressionista ai suoi soggetti, Lang ha esposto con successo negli Stati Uniti. Un critico, scrivendo nel 1917, osservò che era studente di Chase "che meglio assimilava la sua tecnica e la sua verve." Un modello frequente per il suo insegnante, che ha lodato la sua "abilità notevole", Lang lo ha anche dipinto numerose volte. Nel 1918, dopo un anno di viaggi nei Caraibi, cadde vittima dell'influenza spagnola. Postumamente, la firma di Lang è stata sostituita con quella di Chase in alcuni dei suoi dipinti – compreso questo.
