The iconography seen in this portrait reveals a devotee of Vishnu. The sandalwood paste tikka on his forehead and the topi on his head indicate an affiliation to the warkari sampraday from Maharashtra, a religious movement within the bhakti spiritual tradition of Hinduism.Trindade’s mastery over watercolour and eye for detail are magnificently showcased in this portrait of a holy man on the move, perhaps on his way to a pilgrimage when the artist asked for a pose. The sadhu’s divine character is revealed by his prominent eyes and delicate features, his unruly beard embodies renunciation.
