Nel 1641 il quarto duca di Lennox fu creato primo duca di Richmond da suo cugino, Carlo I, re d'Inghilterra. Quattro anni prima aveva sposato Mary Villiers, figlia del favorito del re, il duca di Buckingham. Van Dyck probabilmente dipinse questo maestoso ritratto poco dopo l'investitura di Stuart nell'Ordine del Garter, nel novembre 1633. La stella d'argento, la medaglia "Lesser George" su un nastro verde, e la guarnizione stessa (sotto il ginocchio sinistro) sono le insegne dell'ordine. Il grigione suggerisce la nobiltà (alleudando ai loro privilegi di caccia) e forse la virtù della fedeltà.
