Un marinero puritano de la fortuna, el segundo auricular de Warwick promovió la colonización de Connecticut, Massachusetts y Rhode Island, e incautó barcos españoles en nombre del duque de Savoy y Charles I de Inglaterra. Entre los barcos más privados que patrocinó fue el León Blanco, que llevó a los primeros africanos esclavizados a la colonia británica de Virginia en 1619. A pesar de las alusiones a su carrera marítima en la armadura desechada y los barcos en el fondo, Warwick lleva el vestido inflamable de un aristócrata terrestre, reflejando la imagen de sí mismo que deseaba promover.
