Van Dyck era a Palermo, in Sicilia, quando scoppiò una peste e la città fu messa in quarantena. Nella loro disperazione, i residenti pregarono la patrona del XII secolo, Santa Rosalie, i cui resti perduti furono riscoperti in mezzo all’epidemia. Le immagini di Santa Rosalie erano molto richieste; questa è stata dipinta da Van Dyck sopra un autoritratto che aveva disegnato sulla tela. Acquisito nel 1871, fu uno dei primi dipinti europei ad entrare nella collezione The Met.
