Van Uffel era un rico comerciante flamenco que vivía en Venecia, donde Van Dyck pintó este retrato. Inspirada en retratos venecianos del Renacimiento Alto, Van Dyck representaba a Van Uffel como un caballero aprendido, con signos de sus variados intereses: una herramienta de redacción, un grabador, el arco de una viola da gamba, una cabeza antigua, un dibujo y un globo celeste. La postura inusual de Van Uffel, como si girase para dirigirse al accionista, ofrece una calidad dinámica a su retrato.
