Van Uffel war ein wohlhabender flämischer Kaufmann, der in Venedig lebte, wo Van Dyck dieses Portrait malte. Inspiriert von venezianischen Porträts der Hohen Renaissance, präsentierte Van Dyck Van Uffel als gelernter Gentleman, mit Zeichen seiner vielfältigen Interessen: ein Entwurfswerkzeug, einen Blockflöten, den Bogen einer Viola da gamba, einen antiken Kopf, eine Zeichnung und einen himmlischen Globus. Van Uffels ungewöhnliche Haltung, als ob er sich an den Betrachter wendet, verleiht seinem Porträt eine dynamische Qualität.
