Van Uffel era un ricco mercante fiammingo che viveva a Venezia, dove Van Dyck dipinse questo ritratto. Ispirato dai ritratti veneziani dell'Alto Rinascimento, Van Dyck ritrasse Van Uffel come un gentiluomo appreso, con segni dei suoi molteplici interessi: uno strumento di abbozzo, un registratore, l'arco di una viola da gamba, una testa antica, un disegno e un globo celeste. La postura insolita di Van Uffel, come se volendo affrontare il beholder, conferisce una qualità dinamica al suo ritratto.
