Nel ritratto di Van Dyck, la regina incinta d'Inghilterra culla le braccia sopra l'addome mentre sta accanto a una corona che pubblicizza il suo rango. Henrietta Maria commissionò questo dipinto come dono per il cardinale Francesco Barberini, che vide la devota regina francese come collaboratore critico nel suo sogno di ritrovare l'Inghilterra per la Chiesa cattolica. Il ritratto di Van Dyck è stato uno dei tanti doni diplomatici che hanno diffuso la fama e l’influenza dell’artista in tutta Europa.
