Margareta de Vos era figlia di un distillatore e sorella di tre pittori. Nella rappresentazione di Van Dyck, il collare di De Vos, sbiancante e affamato, avrebbe servito come un segno sorprendente della prosperità, mentre le sue alterazioni alla composizione della sua testa sono ora visibili ad occhio nudo. Il vaso di vetro di fiori nel ritratto di De Vos rappresenta uno dei passaggi più virtuosistici in tutto il lavoro di Van Dyck, trasmutando i tratti audaci e incerti di vernice gialla blu e burrosa in riflessi sulla superficie del vaso.
